UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — In a swift reversal, the Trump administration said that it will not allow oil drilling off the coast of Florida.

Last week, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke unveiled a proposal to roll back offshore drilling restrictions on potentially billions of acres in the Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

However, after a meeting with Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Jan. 9, Zinke said that drilling off the state’s coast was “off the table.”

Zinke, explaining the reversal, said, “I support the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.”

Other governors, both Democrat and Republican, have also come out in opposition of the proposal.

The Obama administration largely blocked drilling between state coastal waters and the deep ocean, which Zinke argues has cost the country billions of dollars in lost oil and gas revenue.
