UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Police in Thailand tracked down a wanted Japanese mob boss after pictures of his tattoos went viral.
Shigeharu Shirai was arrested for alleged visa violations Jan. 10 in the town of Lopburi north of Bangkok.
The Associated Press said the 72-year-old was hiding in the area to dodge murder charges in Japan.
Japanese police were alerted to Shirai’s whereabouts after photos of his full-body tattoos were shared on Facebook in August 2017.
A Thai civilian posted the images apparently unaware of Shirai’s identity and they went viral.
Japanese police asked Thai authorities to intervene.
Officials say Shirai is a retired member of a faction within Japan’s Yakuza. He’s wanted in his home country for allegedly killing a rival gang member in 2003.
A Thai police spokesperson said Shirai admitted to his ties with the gang after being arrested.
He will be extradited to Japan to face the murder charges.
