UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Russian bots retweeted President Trump nearly half a billion times during the last months of his presidential campaign.
Twitter told lawmakers on Jan. 25 that 50,000 Russian-linked accounts retweeted Trump nearly 470,000 times from Sept. 1 to Nov. 15, 2016.
These bots accounted for 4.25 percent of all retweets of Trump’s account in the final weeks of the election campaign and in the days immediately following the vote.
In comparison, those accounts retweeted Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton less than 50,000 times during the same timeframe.
Twitter, however, stressed that the accounts in question represented “a very small fraction of overall activity” on its platform in the lead-up to the election.
The information came as Congress continues to press tech companies for information on how Russia used social media to try to influence the 2016 presidential election.
