UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte encouraged the International Criminal Court to investigate him for alleged crimes against humanity.
However, Duterte told the ICC on Feb. 9 that if they do find him guilty, he would rather be executed than imprisoned.
Reuters reports Duterte said, “Find a country where they kill people with a firing squad and i’m ready.”
The ICC announced Thursday it’s conducting a preliminary examination to determine if there’s sufficient evidence to begin a full-scale investigation into Duterte’s drug war.
The Philippine National Police say more than 3,987 drug personalities were killed between July 1, 2016 and Jan. 17 this year.
Human rights groups allege the death toll is higher and that drug suspects are being killed extrajudicially.
Duterte has denied the allegations.
The PNP announced Friday 53 drug personalities have been killed since December alone.
