UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Police say there have been multiple deaths and more than a dozen people were injured in a school shooting in Florida.

Authorities say the shooting began around 2 p.m. local time on Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In a press conference, the Broward County Sheriff Department said 17 people are dead and 14 people were transported to nearby area hospitals.

The suspect was arrested off-campus and is identified as 19-year-old Nicholas Cruz, a former student at the high school.

Students said they fled the building in different directions after gunshots were heard close to classes being dismissed.

Some said they escaped to a nearby middle school and a Walmart.

Police arrived on the scene along with a SWAT team, and began to escort students out of the building.
