UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — ABS-CBN’s fantasy series “Bagani” will retain its controversial name.
Representatives of ABS-CBN, the Commission on Higher Education and indigenous communities met Saturday, March 10, to discuss the word “bagani,” which refers to warriors of Northern Mindanao tribes.
In a statement released Tuesday, ABS-CBN said the groups determined the word is being used in good faith.
The groups also agreed to partner to educate the audience about the indigenous roots of Filipino culture.
ABS-CBN said in Tuesday’s statement that real Baganis exist among indigenous peoples, or IPs.
The network said, “They are the IP’s warriors who protect entire communities and ancestral domains from external threats and armed intrusions.”
It added that baganis are looked up to as “armed vanguards willing to die for communities to thrive and live in peace.”
