UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Despite President Donald Trump’s eagerness to withdraw troops from Syria, the U.S. military will remain in the Middle East country to continue the fight against the Islamic State.
In a statement on April 4, the White House said that the U.S. military mission in Syria “is coming to a rapid end” and that the Islamic State is “almost completely destroyed.”
The White House added that the U.S. remains “committed to eliminating the small ISIS presence in Syria that our forces have not already eradicated.”
The statement appears to indicate that the U.S. will not quickly pull military forces out of Syria, despite Trump’s comments last week that American troops would leave the country “very soon.”
Roughly 2,000 U.S. troops are in Syria fighting the Islamic State group.
