UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A man in New York ended up in the hospital after eating the world’s hottest chili pepper.

The 34-year-old man ate a single Carolina Reaper chili while competing in a chili-eating contest.

The Carolina Reaper packs an average punch of over 1.5 million Scoville Heat Units.

In comparison, a jalapeno pepper reaches up to a mere 8,000 on the same scale.

According to an article published April 9 in the journal BMJ Case Reports, in the days after the man ate the Carolina Reaper, he felt severe neck pain and excruciating “thunderclap” headaches that would come on without warning and last a few seconds.

The man to a hospital where doctors found the blood vessels in his brain had narrowed and were restricting blood flow.

He was diagnosed with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome. It’s usually triggered by drugs like cocaine or amphetamines.

The condition cleared up on its own after a handful of weeks.
