UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — The Philippine government is standing by its decision to deny entry and deport a socialist party official.
Giacomo Filibeck, deputy secretary-general of the Party of European Socialists (PES), arrived at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport on Sunday April 15 with about 20 other delegates.
However, he was the only one given a blacklist order and deported.
Filibeck was in the country in October 2017 with a human rights fact-finding mission regarding Duterte’s war on drugs.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said this participation justifies the government to refuse entry, as it is illegal for foreigners to engage in partisan activity.
PES President Sergei Stanishev suspects Duterte expelled Filibeck in an attempt to silence critics.
Monday morning, immigration officials also detained and are expected to deport an Australian nun for participating in partisan rallies.
