UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A 7-year-old British boy is back home after life-saving surgery.

Jay Crouch received five new organs — two kidneys, a pancreas, liver and bowel — during one 10-hour operation.

Doctors at Birmingham Children’s Hospital say they haven’t performed an operation this complex in 20 years, and Jay’s the first child on record to receive five organs in a single procedure.

They’re thrilled with the progress he’s making too.

Jay can now swallow and digest food for the first time in his young life.

He’s still working his way toward a full diet though.

Lead surgeon Khalid Sharif said, “We couldn’t be happier with the progress Jay has made so far, but this will obviously need very vigilant monitoring and support over the coming months and years.”

Jay recently returned home to Leicestershire, and his mum, Katie Freestone, says there aren’t enough words to express her gratitude to the donor and their family.
