UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A South African footballer has died two months after he was struck by lightning on the pitch.
Maritzburg United forward Luyanda Ntshangase had reportedly been in an induced coma since lightning hit him during a March 1 friendly.
On May 4, the club confirmed its 21-year-old rising star had died.
Maritzburg Chairman Farook Kadodia described Ntshangase as an “exciting young player with enormous potential.”
He also offered the club’s thoughts and prayers to the Ntshangase family.
The club and family are now working together to finalize details of a memorial service and funeral.
It means Maritzburg’s players will be preparing for their first-ever Nedbank Cup final, on May 19, with heavy hearts.
The club is used to persevering through tragedy though.
It reportedly lost midfielders to deadly car crashes in each of the past two years.
