You remember The Dress, right?
The one that divided families and turned friends into enemies — all because people couldn’t decide what color it was?
There’s new viral phenomenon but it plays a trick on your ears.
If you’ve listened to the clip, you’re probably sure about whichever word you heard.
But there is a real debate sweeping the internet.
According to The New York Times, a high school student in Georgia first posted the clip on Reddit after he looked up the definition of the word “laurel” — which is a wreath worn on the head.
The clip was the site’s pronunciation guide.
A tool created by The Times reveals that removing the high frequencies from the clip lets you hear “laurel” while removing low frequencies produces “yanny.”
So what you hear might depend on how your ears interpret frequencies.
