UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte failed to reach Benham Rise to commemorate the anniversary of its renaming as the Philippine Rise.
The undersea volcanic ridge is potentially rich in mineral and natural gas deposits.
Duterte boarded Philippine Navy ship BRP Davao del Sur on May 15, as planned. However, according to the Manila Times, a palace spokesperson decided the trip was a “logistics nightmare” and canceled it.
The plan was reportedly for the president to take a jet ski to the underwater land mass. However, he left the ship by helicopter early Tuesday evening.
According to GMA Network, Duterte did attend a program on the navy ship to celebrate the first anniversary of the renaming and launched the start of a 50-man scientific research team in the area.
