Russian President Vladimir Putin was all smiles May 15, as he drove a bright orange truck across Russia’s newly constructed Kerch Strait bridge.
The bridge, with a price tag of nearly $4 billion, connects Russian mainland with the annexed Crimea peninsula.
Russia’s invasion and subsequent take-over of Crimea in 2014 upset many internationally.
It even prompted the U.S. and European Union to impose sanctions on Moscow.
Since few countries honor Russia’s annexation, the peninsula remains isolated.
ABC News reported Western companies are restricted from doing business there.
Putin has ignored the criticism and built the controversial bridge that’s 19 kilometers long.
According to Intellinews, the bridge has two layers with cars on top and a railway on the bottom.
While it opens to cars this week, the rail section isn’t expected to be opened until the end of next year.
