UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled a planned White House ceremony for Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles, a move which further inflamed the commander in chief’s battle with the NFL.

In a statement released on Monday, June 4, Trump said that Tuesday’s White House visit had been cancelled and that he would instead host a “Celebration of America” with military bands playing the national anthem and other patriotic songs.

On Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blamed the Eagles organization for the event’s cancellation, saying that the administration was notified at the last minute that only a few players planned to attend.

The president has frequently criticized NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.

The NFL announced a new policy last month that players must stand during the anthem or stay in the locker room.
