UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) – A Filipino priest was shot dead over the weekend in Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija.

According to Catholic news service CBCP, Richmond Nilo was killed Sunday, June 10, inside the barangay chapel of Mayamot, before mass. The news service asked for the police service to “act swiftly” and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a press conference on Monday, spokesperson for the Philippine government Harry Roque said the investigation into Nilo’s death is a “top priority.”

Roque also dismissed allegations that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s may have encouraged people to rebel against priests, with his tirades against the church.

Nilo is the third Catholic priest to be murdered in the last six months; Marcelito Paez died in December and Mark Ventura died in April.

The head of Philippine National Police, however, says Nilo’s death is an isolated case.
