UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Australian national and co-founder of the Myanmar Times newspaper Ross Dunkley was reportedly arrested in Yangon on drug charges on June 7.

Early Thursday morning, police raided Dunkley’s apartment in Bahan Township.

Police Major Thein Win, confirmed to The Irrawaddy, that Dunkley and another suspect were apprehended with 797 yaba pills and 303 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

The other suspect was identified as John McKenzie, who is understood to be partners with Dunkley in a new media endeavor.

Possession of or trafficking for sales of illegal narcotics is punishable by a minimum of 10 years to a max of life in prison or the death penalty.

Police denied that this arrest was in connection to a recent major drug bust in Malaysia, saying Dunkley was a “drug user rather than a drug dealer.”
