UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — “Ocean’s 8,” the female-led heist film debuted with about $41.5 million at the domestic box office this weekend.
The previous three Ocean’s films in the franchise all debuted between $36-$39 million.
The Warner Bros. spinoff features Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, and a parade of other female stars who plot a major heist at the Met Gala in New York City.
Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein told the Associated Press, “We thought we’d come in the $35-40 (million) range. Number one, it’s fun. Number two, it hits an underserved audience. Unfortunately, there is just a lack of stories that are aimed right at women.”
This weekend, the audience for the film was largely female with estimates close to 70%.
Along with “Ocean’s 8,” two other films widely released this weekend were female-fronted, horror thriller “Hereditary” and crime thriller “Hotel Artemis.”
