Philippine transportation authorities are considering implementing a mandatory drug test policy for all drivers of public utility vehicles.
Last week in Cebu, President Rodrigo Duterte said in order to minimize road accidents, bus drivers must undergo drug tests before being allowed to drive.
The Land Transportation Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said on Tuesday, June 12 it is still discussing the proposal.
LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada said if the policy is mandated, it would cover not only bus drivers but all public utility vehicle drivers.
A government-sponsored study in 2016 showed road crash incidents in the National Capital region have increased by more than 14% from the previous year.
Driver error is said to be the leading cause of road accidents, at least in Metro Manila.
