UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Japan is mourning a heroic man who died trying to save the lives of strangers.
38-year-old Kotaro Umeda was killed during a violent knife attack in a Shinkansen bullet train traveling between the Shin-Yokohama and Odawara stations on June 9th.
The suspect, 22-year-old Ichiro Kojima, was sitting in the train when he suddenly began stabbing the woman next to him, and then another woman nearby. He later told police he just wanted to kill anyone.
The women tried to escape up the aisle. Umeda witnessed the struggle and tried to intervene, but was killed.
According to police, he had several wounds to the torso and a deep gash on his neck.
The two women survived, and one said she felt guilty that the man died to save her life.
