UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — The U.S. Air Force has located an officer who disappeared 35 years ago and has evaded authorities ever since.

The Air Force announced on June 7 that William Howard Hughes Jr. had been apprehended “without incident.”

Hughes, a captain in the Air Force with a top-secret clearance, disappeared in July of 1983 after a temporary assignment in Europe.

He was last seen in New Mexico withdrawing $28,500 from his bank account at 19 different locations.

His mysterious disappearance during the Cold War spawned conspiracy theories that he had been abducted by the Soviet Union or defected to work against the U.S.

As it turns out, Hughes was actually living in California under a false identity.

A passport fraud investigation earlier this month uncovered that a man claiming to be “Barry O’Beirne” was actually Hughes.

It is unclear what charges he may face.
