UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI)  – American golfer Stacy Lewis made history this week and it had nothing to do with the sport.

The two-time major champion announced on Wednesday, June 27 her main sponsor KPMG will continue to pay her the full value of her contract during maternity leave.

This is something that has never happened before.

Lewis, who is due to give birth in November, said she hopes her sponsorship deal will bring about change and set a precedent.

According to Lewis, many female golfers have to make a decision between getting paid or having a baby.

Tennis star Serena Williams also made headlines this week regarding gender equality in sports.

The Women’s Tennis Association said on Wednesday, Serena’s seeding for this year’s Wimbledon tournament will not be penalized following her pregnancy break.

Meanwhile, Lewis is playing in her final championship this week before she begins her leave.
