United News International (UNI)- Russian soccer fans rejoiced in the streets after their surprise victory over Spain Sunday, July 1 in the 2018 World Cup.

After two hours of being neck and neck with each team holding one point, the final score came down to penalty kicks from both teams.

Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved the day by blocking Spain’s final penalty kick, bringing Russia out on top by one penalty point.

Spain has yet to defeat a hosting team in the World Cup, and Russia reinforced their losing streak by knocking them out of the competition.

This is a major upset in the soccer community, as Spain has previously won the World Cup and the Euro Cup.

As a result of their victory, Russia will advance to the quarterfinals in their own country.
