UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) – Liu Xia, the widow of Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, has left China after being on house arrest for nearly eight years.

She has been in unofficial detention and reportedly under heavy surveillance in the Chinese capital since her husband won his prize in 2010.

He was a human rights campaigner and was jailed in 2009 for inciting subversion. He died of liver cancer last year.

She was never charged with a crime but according to the BBC, she was ready to die in protest at her continued detention earlier his year.

Her brother told reporters she has gone to Europe to “start her life anew.” She arrived in Germany on July 10.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Liu’s departure had nothing to do with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Germany this week.
