UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Another local official in the Philippines has been gunned down.
Al-Rashid Mohammad Ali, vice mayor of Sapa Sapa in Tawi Tawi, was in his vehicle with his family on Wednesday, July 10, when two unidentified men in a motorcycle pulled over and shot him.
Ali reportedly died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
Police are still determining the motive for the killing.
Ali’s family said he mentioned receiving threats.
The vice mayor meanwhile, is the latest local official to be murdered recently.
Last week, Mayor Antonio Halili of Tanauan in Batangas was shot during a flag raising ceremony and died. A day later, Mayor Ferdinand Bote of General Tinio in Nueva Ecija was ambushed by unidentified gunmen. He also perished.
The ABS-CBN reported 16 mayors and vice-mayors have been killed since President Rodrigo Duterte unleashed his anti-drug campaign back in 2016.
