UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) – A Kazakhstan Olympic figure skater has died following a knife attack.

Denis Ten, who won bronze at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was killed on Thursday, July 19, and prosecutors say they are treating the case as murder.

According to Kazinform news agency, Ten was stabbed by two men who were trying to steal his car mirrors in the city of Almaty.

The three-time Olympian was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

Authorities say the attack will be thoroughly investigated.

Meanwhile, members of the sporting world paid their tributes to Ten.

The president of the International Olympic Committee said in a statement, Ten was a “great athlete and a great ambassador” and American figure skater Adam Rippon, described Ten on Twitter as a “huge inspiration.”
