UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL — It’s the world’s oldest profession.
Now sex workers are demanding the sex industry be legalized.
In a Business Times report, sex workers showcased music and dance at the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam on July 26 — to raise awareness that prostitutes are people who have rights.
The cast of “Sex Worker’s Opera” sang and dance to such themes as “sex is work” and “there are no bad whores, just bad laws.”
While prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, in many places across the globe it’s a crime.
The paper reported workers in countries where prostitution is legal found it easier to report violence to police.
Meanwhile, experts claim anti-prostitution helps fuel the spread of HIV among prostitutes because they have to be secretive.
The World Health Organization also found female sex workers had a 13.5% greater chance of getting infected with HIV.
