United News International (UNI)- Airbnb has canceled its contest offering the chance for four lucky winners and their guests to spend the night on the Great Wall of China.

The contest was launched as an effort to promote sustainable tourism to China, as over 10 million people traveling to China have used Airbnb since it launched in 2008.

The decision comes amidst backlash from locals.

One critic said, “The Great Wall is a historical relic under protection, how can they let it be turned into a common guest house?!”

In addition, the cultural commission overseeing the Great Wall said they had no knowledge of the contest, but wouldn’t have supported it even if they had.

Airbnb issued an apology in which it remarked the company respects the feedback received and canceled the contest as a result.

The company also added it “will be in touch in the future about other ways you can explore and discover amazing experiences in China.”
